The Top Longest Tennis Matches Recorded Till Date

A game of Premier League football or T20 cricket has a limited time period and you can see the game end within the awarded time. However, it’s hard to say the same about a game of tennis, which not only opens the door towards the longest tennis match in history but can easily form a list featuring at least six of such games. These clashes have seen some of the most important tennis players of all time fight till the very end to secure a lead and finally win the game.

But the game had different plans and today we have decided to take a look back at a few iconic games that have gone on for hours.

John Isner Vs Nicolas Mahut (Wimbledon 2010)

The need to continue and the determination to win a game that has already gone past the usual time is something that was visible on the faces of John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. Together they played out one of the longest tennis games in history that went on for a total duration of 11 hours and 5 minutes.

The final set of the game finished in Isner’s favour as the score went on to stand at 70-68, which was longer than the previous one. Towards the end, the game had all the right ingredients to be called the best and considering the fact that tennis rules have changed over the years, we might never see a clash that will go on for 11 hours and 5 minutes.

Czech Republic Vs Switzerland (Davis Cup 2013)

It took a total of seven hours and 2 minutes for Lukas Rosol and Tomas Berdych to earn a win over Stanislas Wawrinka and Marco Chiudinelli. It was one of the most historic games to ever have been played at the Davis Cup and is sure to have left everyone confused, especially the ones who had indulged in tennis betting.

The ridiculous lengths to which the game had proceeded left everyone wondering about a possible ending as fatigue had come into the picture. However, after a record time of 7 hours and 2 minutes, we were able to see a winner.

Leonardo Mayer Vs Joao Souza (Davis Cup 2015)

Leonardo Mayer and Joao Souza represent a classic rivalry in tennis and it was quite visible when the two faced each other in the 2015 Davis Cup. When the crowd took their seats to see the epic clash, they had no clue that they would be in the same seats for 6 hours & 43 minutes.

Known as the third-longest tennis match, the final set between Mayer and Souza ended as 15-13 in favour of Mayer and went on to finally have a winner.

Kevin Anderson Vs John Isner (Wimbledon 2018)

While John Isner was involved in yet another game that went beyond 6 hours, it came short of beating his previous record that lasted for 11 hours and 5 minutes in an intense clash between him and Nicolas Mahut. Regardless, Kevin Anderson Vs John Isner at Wimbledon 2018 represented a high-octane battle that is now known as the fourth-longest tennis game of all time.

John Isner, who is also a contender for the fastest tennis serve, saw his powerful serve play an important part in the game. However, it was Kevin Anderson who finally came on top at the final set by winning it 26-24. The game which went on for hours left many anxious about when it would end and the ones who had taken part in sports betting may have been the most anxious ones among the crowd.

Fabrice Santoro Vs Arnaud Clement (French Open 2004)

The 2004 French Open game between Fabrice Santoro and Arnaud Clement could have been the fourth-longest tennis match if not for the Kevin Anderson and John Isner clash at Wimbledon in 2018. Instead, this game is the fifth-longest one in history and went on for over two days. Played between two Frenchmen at Roland Garros, the game went on to showcase talent and fighting spirit.

The crowd kept buzzing as both the players went to 16-14 in the fifth set and saw Santoro save two match points.

Vicki Nelson Vs Jean Hepner (Central Fidelity Banks International 1984)

Vicki Nelson was ranked 93 and Jean Hepner 172 when the two met at the Central Fidelity Banks International. Due to their ranking, nobody expected both players to produce one of the most iconic tennis games of all time which was also the longest match for over two decades. Since both players were desperate for a win, one could see them make specific chances and were known to be stubborn in their defence.

Filled with different moves, tactics and even a 643-stroke rally, the match was something that could not be forgotten anytime soon and is remembered to this day. If it had to be viewed in terms of online betting, it would be a classic underdog vs favourites game.

John McEnroe Vs Mats Wilander (Davis Cup 1982)

This was another interesting game that saw Mats Wilander take on John McEnroe. While McEnroe was already an established player Mats Wilander was starting to get recognised for the kind of talent that he was. And for a good part of the game, many believed that Wilander was going to win it, especially when he sealed a third set win of 15-17.

John McEnroe who had to go deep in the fifth set eventually sealed the game and won it for good as it ended after 6 hours and 22 minutes.

Boris Becker Vs John McEnroe (Davis Cup 1987)

Both Boris Becker and John McEnroe are recognised world-class tennis players who have 126 career titles between them. Their 1987 meeting at the Davis Cup will always be iconic not only for the fact that it lasted over 6 hours and 21 minutes long but for the memorable meeting that it turned out to be.

However, towards the end, it was Becker who got the better of McEnroe and sealed the win.
