What Does Hit and Stand Mean When Playing Blackjack?

The classic table card-comparing game, Blackjack is the most played casino game. It has been in existence since the 17th century. The game requires a combination of sheer luck and very basic strategies. Also known as 21, this game is all about attaining a better score close to 21 than the fellow competitors and the dealer.

To win, a player must aim to score as close to 21 as possible but not greater than 21. The game is played with more than two players and at least one deck of cards (52 cards). The cards from 2-10 hold a value equal to the number. The face cards namely King, Queen and Jack hold a value of 10. An ace could be valued as 1 or 11 depending on the player. After the dealer has dealt the cards, there is an option to ‘hit’ or to ‘stand’.

What Does Hit and Stand Mean When Playing Blackjack?

“Hit” big bucks in Blackjack

After the cards are dealt, a player can ask to ‘hit’ which means the player wants a new card. ‘Hit’ is used when a player believes that the score can be improved with another card. For example, if the two dealt cards are a three and a five. The score would be an eight which is nowhere close to twenty-one. Meaning very low chances of relative to that of your competitors and dealer. In such a situation, a player would ‘hit’ and get another card in order to get a score closer to twenty-one.

However, if the player goes over 21 after the first ‘hit’, another card can be dealt by the dealer by calling a hit. An ace can be valued at 1 or 11 as per the player needs. An ace card values 11 leads to a ‘soft hand’. An ace with a value of 1 leads to a ‘hard hand’. A ‘hard hand’ or a ‘hard total’ is considered better than a ‘soft hand’ of the same value.

“Stand” the chance to win in Blackjack

When a player is confident that his score is better than that of dealer’s, ‘stand’ is called to freeze the round. If the player beats the dealer, a payout of 1.5 times of bet is paid to the player. ‘Stand’ is called to not receive any new card. For example, if a player gets a face card and an ace. This makes a blackjack or perfect 21. The player should call ‘stand’ in this situation to win the round.

It is worth noticing that, if both the player and the dealer gets a Blackjack, the round results in a tie. In case of a tie, the bet amount is returned meaning nothing is lost and nothing is gained. Before calling to stand in Blackjack, it is advisable to get closer to 21 as possible without exceeding it.
Moreover, there is a strategy table in every Blackjack game which helps with providing the best winning odds. The table uses the terms Stand, Hit, Double, and Split. However, the results displayed on the table are highly probable to be true but do not necessarily assure a win.
